英国女诗人伊丽莎白·巴蕾特·布朗宁（Elizabeth Barrett Browning，1806-1861）的《葡萄牙十四行诗》（Sonnets from the Portuguese）由44首十四行诗组成，是诗人在罗伯特·勃朗宁向她求爱时所写，诗中表达了她对罗伯特·勃朗宁的深情。这些诗于1850年出版。由 于作者曾对一位葡萄牙古典诗人十分敬佩，她的丈夫给她起了“小葡萄牙人”的昵称，这部爱情诗集也因此得名。下面所选的诗取自《葡萄牙十四行诗》的第43 首。此诗采用意大利十四行诗的格律，韵脚按abba，abba，cdcdcd排列。

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
